Our selection of training programmes offer intensive courses in beach lifeguarding, pool lifeguarding and first aid. Also longer term Lifeguard instruction, training and assessment. They are designed to transform the enthusiasts who attend them into trained professionals.

Other services we offer:

Beach Lifeguard Training

The beach lifeguard course runs over a period of six days, five rigorous days of training are followed by a sixth and final examination day. Candidates are trained in beach lifeguard theory, practical first aid and life support, as well as skills in both the pool and the ocean.

We run the National Aquatic Rescue Standard (NARS) Beach Lifeguard (NARS BL) which has been designed by the Surf Life Saving Association, Swimming Teachers Association and Institute of Leisure Amenities Management and is recognised by most, if not all local authorities who employ beach lifeguards.

Pool Lifeguard Training

We train the RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, which has become the footstep into the leisure industry. The qualification is taught in 2 parts: Foundation Module (5 days) and ISRM Professional module.

Our pool lifeguarding courses are also intensive. The criteria are similar to those of a beach lifeguard qualification but include pool lifeguard theory. There is also a strong element of spinal injury response, theory and management, which is more common within a pool environment.

In addition to pool lifeguard qualifications, we also run the RLSS UK National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches, a 2 day course for non- lifeguards supervising children on poolside.

The RLSS UK Emergency Response Programme is a suite of basic rescue awards for staff who work near water and don't have direct supervisory responsibilities, but may get called upon to initiate or assist with the rescue of a person in dificulty. This can be taught for swiming pools, open water or outdoor activity centres.

First Aid Training

All of our lifeguards are trained by the highest quality instructors, who have years of experience both in teaching and in practicing first aid and attend regular updates to keep up with the latest developments and procedures.

The basic courses include 4 day Health and Safety (HSE) First Aid at Work, two day refresher course and one day Emergency Aid for Appointed Persons course, as well as Advanced First Aid at Work

We are also holding the one day AED Defibrillator and Extended Life Support course which includes advanced resuscitation techniques such as the practical use of Advisory External Defibrillators, Manual Suction Units and Bag & Masks and the administering of Oxygen Therapy.

The latest addition to ELA's portfolio is the RYA First Aid Certificate. This course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid procedures for injuries and illness which might be experienced when afloat in small boats, including windsurfers, inland and up to 60 miles offshore.

Benefits of attending intensive courses;-

Hiring ELA Instructors/Examiners/Trainers/Asessors

We have been approached by many facilities who frequently organise their own courses and are let down at the last minute by the Instructor either through illness or another unfortunate event.

At ELA we can offer you the services of our instructors to save you from these unfortunate circumstances. We are able to teach anywhere but due to the popularity of this service, you are advised to approach us early.

The Instructor will visit you prior to the course to survey the beach, pool or enviroment they will be teaching in for a number of reasons:-

  1. You get to meet the instructor on a personal level and have the opportunity to determine if they will be able to connect with your staff
  2. You have the opportunity to inform the instructor of any specific requirements you have
  3. The instructor surveys the extent of equipment that is currently used at the facility and can determine any special teaching areas that will need to be covered. They also become comfortable with the surroundings they will be working in.
  4. We also get the opportunity to analyse your current training levels and determine if there is anything else you should be receiving.
